4 Signs Your Garage Door Opener Needs Replacing

A garage door opener is a device that opens and shuts garage doors. It is typically operated using a remote controller where the remote sends a signal to it, and it relays that signal to the motor (built inside it).

The motor then drives the cables and pulleys that turn the torsion bar, which raises (or lowers) the garage door.

Garage door openers are modern conveniences that we don’t think about much until they suddenly stop working.

Fortunately, though, garage doors are quite forgiving and almost always display signs of trouble, alerting us to call for professional help before a major breakdown or mishap could happen.
What kind of signs exactly?

They begin vibrating

While vibrations in a garage door opener may seem harmless, they spell trouble for the operation of your garage door. A vibrating garage door opener indicates a worn out opener armature and is unsafe for use.

They make unusual sounds

Older garage door openers are noisy by design. Chain drive openers are especially loud. However, if you have a newer model of garage door opener installed at your home, and it has been making unusual noises lately, it’s a sign that the opener needs replacing.

They become slow or unresponsive

There are a few things that could make your garage door opener slow or unresponsive, and these things may not always be related to a problem in your opener. For example, the batteries in the controller may dry out and make your opener unresponsive. Or, the spring on the garage door assembly may form rust and make your opener slow.

If you’ve checked everything and there is no fault to be found with either the controller, the spring or any other part of your garage door system, then the problem is likely to be with your opener’s wiring or logic board. Get your garage door opener replaced.

They open the door and then suddenly reverse it

If your garage door opens, and then suddenly reverses without you pressing the close button on the controller, the electronics within your garage door opener could be faulty.

Call in a professional and have your opener inspected. If they confirm that the problem is indeed with the electronics of your opener, have the opener replaced.
